Anisong: Diamond Crevasse.. and a dedication

I know I haven’t posted enough on the current season (and I would have, *grumble grumble*). But something else far more solemn in nature happened while my site was offline.

This song probably needs little introduction. Diamond Crevasse is one of the defining songs of Macross Frontier, performed by the venerable May’n in the guise of Sheryl Nome. The version I have here is part of the one popularly known as “Shinkuu” Diamond Crevasse – a particularly emotive version of the song performed by Sheryl Nome during the critical events of episode 20.

This one is dedicated to Tan Shyn Lyn, who took her life in the early twilight of the 20th of April, 2010.

Hit the jump for lyrics and translations, and hit F8 to play the song while it’s up.

Anisong of the Season: Trust Me

Yes I’m still alive. Shocking but true :) So I’m presently in the midst of exploiting a precious gap in the deadline-queue to frantically put together a Google Summer of Code proposal for Plasma, so expect a wildly euphoric or drippingly dejected post on that in some weeks. It’s the typical rough time near the end of the semester now, but I thought I should at least come and do the token anisong of the season post, taking the opportunity to also pen some random thoughts about the winter season in general :)

Quite frankly winter has been a rather weak season for me, though I suspect my genre preferences may have something to do with it. Sora no Woto and even Hanamaru didn’t quite do it for me after awhile, though BakaTest manages to more or less keep up the entertainment, largely through shamelessly shipping Yuuji and Shouko :P Star show Durarara remained good, but it’s just the kind of show that’s a little heavy on the digestion, leaving me occasionally so starved for lighter entertainment that I ended up rummaging through some old titles and watching episodes of – of all things – Bamboo Blade.

Music-wise, though, winter has been pretty good. Railgun’s new pieces were expectedly decent stuff. Sora no Woto’s songs, too, managed to grow on me, somewhat in contrast with the show itself. In the end though it is the Durarara songs that somehow captured the flag of my heart this season. There’s something about the way the songs blend into the telling of the story, melodically and lyrically, that gives the songs a uniquely Durarara sound. The video sequences that played alongside each were certainly no let down either.

Oddly, if you had asked me to take a pick at the beginning of the season, I would have showered my favor on the OP – “Uragiri no Yuuyake” – without a second thought. Now at the end of the season though, I find myself liking “Trust Me” a good bit better. I’m not sure exactly how the change of heart happened, but it likely has to do with how beautifully “Trust Me” drew the curtains on many of the episodes up to this point. To me it has truly become a defining part of the Durarara experience and it probably won’t ever quite feel right to come away from a Durarara episode without first leaning back and absently rolling “Trust Me”s affectionate lyrics over the taste buds of my mind.

Anyway, so here I present you my chosen Anisong of the Season: The ED to Durarara!! – “Trust Me”. As usual, hit the jump for a pic, Romaji lyrics and translations. And hit F8 to play the song while it’s up. Enjoy!

Anisong: Musuhi no Toki

Whew! Been bogged down with work thanks to my making the age-old mistake of overpopulating my todo list just because it’s holidays. I gotta remember that my work efficiency actually decreases during Chinese New Year due to all the customary hometown visiting and what not. And then there’s that insane, unspeakably hot weather.

So anyway, while I sort through my own stuff and strive to deal with the remaining work (as well as squish the backlogs that have taken the opportunity to pull a full-fledged resurrection), here is an anisong for you in the meantime!

Kannagi’s Musuhi no Toki had been somewhat overshadowed during the show’s broadcast by the really catchy OP as well as the general hilarity and win-barrage that defined the series, but I think it is really quite the lovely, soothing song. It can be nice to listen to songs like these every now and then, to sort of slow us down a little, and perhaps increase our relish for life :)

So! Without further ado, here is Musuhi no Toki, ED to Kannagi, and, as I just found out, performed by Haruka Tomatsu herself! As always, hit F8 to play the song while it’s up, and hit the jump for a pic, lyrics, and translations. Enjoy!

Anisong: Tsukiakari

For most people this song probably needs no introduction :) This is a piece I have fond memories of. I watched the entirety of the first Darker than Black late at night, and the silky, swaying tune of Tsukiakari, accompanied by the soothing image of a quiet, star-gazing Yin amongst the white flowers, invariably proved to be an apt and comfortable curtain-fall.

I don’t know if it’s the lyrics, the tune, the accompanying visuals, or the fact that it is always late at night when the song played, but I’ve come to really associate this song with moonlight. Every now and then in the apartment room I currently sleep in, a bright moon would cast it’s rays straight through the window onto my bed, and invariably as I sink into the covers bathed in that glow this song would start playing in the back of my head.

Moonlight is a strange thing. Even knowing full well that it is nothing but unremarkable sunlight reflected back at us by an inanimate celestial body, I can’t help feeling it draw a shower of mysticism over me. Of course, being highly sleepy at the time helps :)

Anyway, enough random banter! Without further ado, I give you Tsukiakari (that’s “Moonlight” by the way), the ending theme to the first season of Darker than Black. As usual, hit f8 to play the song, and hit the jump for a pic, romaji lyrics, and translations. Enjoy :)

Anisong of the Season: Only my Railgun

More than a little late now I know. I saw all the seasonal anime awards being given out all across the blogosphere, and then noticed that I haven’t posted an anisong for awhile. So I thought hey, why not :)

Personally I thought fall had been a season of really good music. A decent number of OP’s and ED’s captured me quickly and sufficiently so that I sat through them every week instead of skipping them. On top of that a couple of insert songs too were surprisingly good. There was plenty of competition for my favorite track of the season, but in the end I chose Only my Railgun for its upbeat and ringing sounds, its really great tune-lyric synchrony, and its simple, sheer electricity.

I suspect I’m gonna need a good bit of that electricity to survive the coming semester :(

Anyway, here it is. I make an exception to my ‘only post soothing, background-music-ish tunes’ rule to give you the Anisong of the Season. In case you don’t actually know, Only my Railgun is the OP to To Aru Kagaku no Railgun. Because the TV-size version of this song just isn’t awesome enough, I have posted the full-length version :)

Hit the jump for pic, lyrics and translations. Then hit F8 to play the song. Enjoy :)

Anisong: Smile Again

I’m going out on a trip with my family soon, so this shall be the final post of the year ;) I’ve been playing with the idea of putting up something Christmas-themed, but never found anything quite suitable. Well, this is one’s still pretty close, I think.

Here’s another song from Aria, the second ED to Aria the Natural – the second season. In spite of what the lyrics say, I find the song happily suggestive of a cozy, sleepy winter’s night, though being a creature of the tropics I can’t say I’m all that confident about how accurate that impression is :P

In any case, I hope you’ll enjoy this one. The lyrics are nothing noteworthy, but the tune is as sweet and as calming as the series it graces. As always, hit F8 to play the song, and I have romaji lyrics, translations, and a picture after the jump.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays from Between Linux and Anime!

Anisong: Spirale

In case you’re wondering about how all the songs so far are on the soft and gentle side, yes it’s deliberate. I do like a number of the stronger and more upbeat songs too, but those just don’t quite do as ambient background music, don’t you think?

Here is ‘Spirale‘, the first OP to Aria the Origination – third and sadly final season of that delighting show. I have a revisit post on Aria in the pipeline, so having this song up would hopefully prevent it from getting caught in the perma-procrastinate loop that hath heretofore consumed too many a stalwart idea. :(

Romaji lyrics and translations (and pic!) after the jump as usual. Hope you enjoy it as I did! Remember, hit F8 to listen along while reading.

Anisong: Soba ni Irareru Dake de

It’s a new blog and a new beginning and all, so I figured I might as well start something random – whenever I change the anisong that I embed here on my blog, I’ll make a small accompanying post with the (romaji) lyrics and translation. Personally I can remember a good number of anisongs that I started liking a whole lot better after I understood some of the lyrics, so I guess you could say this is my way of sharing that in some small way :) No guarantee that I’d be disciplined enough to keep this up though, but if you like the idea, let me know!

Without further ado, here’s the first installment! Soba ni Irareru Dake de, the ED to the first episode of Sora no Otoshimono (which so far is the only episode I liked).

In case it still isn’t clear by now, you can listen to the song by hitting the F8 key.

Lyrics and translations (and a pic!) after the jump :)
