File previews in folderview popups

Just a quick record. I just committed a fix for a folderview bug that had been (excuse the pun) bugging me for awhile now.

If you’ve been fiddling with the file preview settings in folderview, you’ve probably noticed that there was no way to control file preview in the on-hover popup views – all settings in the config dialog applied only to the icons on the folderview itself, while the popups invariably only previewed images. That has been fixed now – the popups now properly inherit file preview settings:

I had intended to attempt this fix much earlier, but was impaired by formidable difficulties in rebuilding trunk after fresh-installing my system (all the new and unfamiliar dependencies didn’t help :P ). Fortunately bugfixes are still acceptable during feature/string freeze. It would have sucked if this pet peeve of mine had needed to delay its resolution till 4.5 :)

    Nice!
Will it be also possible to turn off this popups?
    Sometimes they are VERY annoying.

I would be intrested as well know is it possible to turn them of or to single click mode when having double click feature. Of course they should follow the hovering option from filemanager if it is set to open folders when hovering D’n’D over them.

The folder view is one of the greatest thing since KDE4 (KDE Plasma) got released. And nice to see someone likes to polish it! :D

  3. Please add pop-up if add folder in plasma taskbar.

    In desktop pop-up OK :)

    In taskbar no :(

    Sorry for bad english.

This kind of polish is exactly what KDE needs. Nice work!

Indeed – a very “popular” bug:

+1 for being able to disable these. They’re just plain annoying sometimes.

About turning of the popups: there have been some work done recently to make the popups less annoying. For example popups no longer show up after a user clicks on a folder and also all the popups close when the user opens a file/folder.

Hopefully this should make it easier to use the folderview popups and also less intrusive for those who don’t want to use them.

    Thanks for the complements :)

It never occurred to me before to want to disable the popups, I like it in a lot of places, and it never really hindered me. Still, it should be pretty easy to do, but we’re in freeze already and adding such an option is clearly a feature, so the earliest this could possibly happen is in 4.5. Also, no guarantees, I’m not the maintainer of folderview, so this would have to go through Fredrik’s approval – and we’re very careful with adding configuration options nowadays.

If the higher-ups approve though, I’d be happy to work up a patch when trunk reopens for 4.5 :)

And as priomsrb noted, some work has already gone into the way the popups behave. They should be more manageable in 4.4.
