Hosting blues… again

Yare yare… so my site went under for a day plus, and then resurfaced with some new PHP settings that were unfriendly to WordPress. I got sick of waiting for my host to fix the problem (yes I bugged them) so I rolled up my sleeves today and did some hacking, making minor modifications to the WordPress code and whacking my .htaccess with some workarounds. And we seem to be more or less back online!

Seem to be. I have no way of knowing for sure. If anything acts in a distastefully screwy way, please do let me know.

Back to my rant, I then discovered to my horror that Akismet has ceased to work (chi.. they must have cut off outgoing connections). Knowing full well that I’d be nose-deep in spam before I could say “God Dammit”, I irritably went to quick-shop for a stand-in spam filter. NoSpamNX is now in the house and working its craft, and has apparently already stopped “7 birdbrained Spambots” so far. Hopefully none of you are among the seven – if you are, email me rite nao so that I may unleash wrath and hell! (see comment form below for my email add)

Anyway, if I were a little less pissed I might have been somewhat pleased with this exercise – some of the counter-spam solutions I saw employ techniques which I found very clever and intriguing.

But since I have just spent the last 2 hours on this while procrastinating on that mountain of work I must now return to, I’m in no mood to be indulgent.

Come to think of it, if Akismet doesn’t work, pingbacks probably won’t either. And I’m a big fan of pingbacks -.- Ugh.

The recent disturbances had better be caused by some massive doomsday DDoS attack and not just some badly planned server upgrade. Think I’ll give this host one more week (oh magnanimous I~!) to get their act back together, failing which I’m gonna hostswap. AGAIN!

  1. If you are interested, you should check out
    http://www.kokidokom.net/

This is where my blog is hosted. The nice guy by the name of “7” runs the place and if you ask him nicely he might let you move there.

Your best bet is probably to try to catch him on IRC, but alternatively you could prolly get his attention by commenting on his blog.

Only if your interested – that and you would have to move and have .kokidokom in your URL.

Your site going down all the time annoys me.

Your site going down all the time annoys me.

    Sorry :(

And thanks for the suggestion. Kokidom does seem like a great host, but I would like to keep my current url if I can at all. That and there’s no guarantee he’d have me :P

I’m only planning to hold out until I graduate and get a job though (which would hopefully be soon), at which point I plan to finally screw free hosts once and for all and get a paid one.

  3. Testing Testing 1-2-3. Lol.

“Think I’ll give this host one more week (oh magnanimous I~!) to get their act back together, failing which I’m gonna hostswap”
    So far so good? :)

Indeed. In fact everything has gone back up now, Akismet inclusive. Sometimes I wonder if my hosts play games with me. They screw up, and right before I hit the “enough is enough!” mark, everything starts working again.

    :(

  5. Just wanted to let you know I started singing “The Real Folk Blues” (the ED from Cowboy Bebop, but you probably knew that) when I saw your title. Of course I changed The Real Folk Blues to The Real Host Blues ;).

On a serious more sympathetic note: Man that sucks. You’ve had hosting problem after hosting problem. I mean my site does go offline for periods of time that leave me hot under the collar, but nothing like this :(.

    LOL

I guess part of the story is I’m really picky with host offerings – in particular I am adamant about being able to send pingbacks because I think it’s a damn good idea. Most free hosts don’t allow outgoing connections, which is necessary for pingbacks, so I’m forced to endure the eccentricities of the precious few who do.

You pay for your hosting right? I guess they’re right about there being no free lunches :(

    Solution:

I have an old laptop that isn’t being used + u have a connection at ur place = why not just host from home? I mean setup ur own server. So easy that even i know how to do it. I’m also willing to *rent out* some space at my place in RVR. :D

So easy that even i know how to do it.

    You do? Because I don’t.. :(

Plus you sure an old laptop can survive as a web server? If nothing else iirc laptops aren’t meant to be left switched on 24/7.. no?

  9. The place that hosts my site is a free hosting place, but I ended up having to pay for addons like extra traffic mb’s because lots of people were visiting. There really is no free lunch when it comes to hosting it seems.

And because they’re free they’ll sometimes have long downtimes :P.

  10. Jason "moofang"

Yeah :( I’ve been battling free host for years now. I’m pretty convinced that I need to ‘graduate’ from them soon and start paying for proper hosting. I just need to graduate from university and find a job first…

  11. I can definitely understand that :/. And I don’t pay that much, maybe $20 a year…
