Anisong of the Season: Oath Sign

So I decided to resurrect Anisong of the Season. Fall 2011 was an overall pretty awesome season with plenty of great music. It felt like almost every show had an OP, ED or both worth sitting through – Tamayura, Last Exile, Chihayafuru, Guilty Crown, Mirai Nikki, even the idolm@ster songs got better in the second half. So I was left with the happy problem of actually being spoilt for choice for Anisong of the Season, in contrast with the season before where I basically just gave up because I didn’t particularly like anything.

In the end from among my favorites of the season (Which included tracks like Memoria of Fate/Zero, Starboard of Last Exile) I chose Oath Sign, the ringing, beating OP for Fate/Zero. Fate/Zero was to me the best show of Fall 2011, head and shoulders and waist, and Oath Sign just had that certain “just right” quality to get you into the correct mood for the show every time, almost on the level of what Bouken Desho Desho did for the original Haruhi. The spectacular animation sequence that accompanied it and LiSA’s rough-and-raw rock-out style only added to the awesome. Loved it, love it. I only hope that the new OP that would in all likelihood surface for the next half would be as awesome. It’ll be a long wait :( Especially since, Nisemonogatari awesome notwithstanding, Winter is thus far looking like a really dry season compared to what we got in Fall.

(Random insert: why does Last Exile 2 appear to be so off-the-radar, at least among the aniblogs that I follow? That stuff ended up something I would consider top-three material even in the stacked season that it fell in, and yet no one seems to be murmuring a word about it. Weird.)

So anyway, here’s Oath Sign by LiSA. As usual, you can hit F8 to listen to it while it’s up, and hit the jump for a picture, Romaji lyrics, and translations. Enjoy.

Building mplayer-mt for Multi-Core HD Video Decoding

Unable to play that 1080p video without lagging? Wanna watch that 720p video file on dated hardware? Well here’s something you can try. Basically the default behavior of most video players is such that they only hog a single core while doing video decoding. If we also commit all the other available cores to the task, well, we’ll of course expect to get better performance. You won’t get double or triple the performance of course – things don’t work out that simply. The difference is noticeable though.

This isn’t a new method. However, the old instructions don’t seem to work anymore – the ffmpeg-mt branch no longer seems to build with mplayer without non-trivial modifications. Fortunately, all the improvements in the ffmpeg-mt branch have recently been merged into the main release. So we can now use the main release instead.

  1. Grab the mplayer source:

    svn co svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/trunk mplayer

  2. Grab the source for the latest ffmpeg release here. The version I tried is the latest one as of the writing of this post: 0.9.1. Simply download and extract the ffmpeg folder into the mplayer folder from the previous command.
  3. Now build mplayer:

    cd mplayer
    ./configure
    nice make -j 4

  4. And install it as ‘mplayer-mt’:

    sudo install -m 755 mplayer /usr/bin/mplayer-mt

Now you can use mplayer-mt to play more performance-intensive videos and should perceive a noticeable improvement, assuming you have a multi-core processor. If you use a GUI frontend like smplayer, look for an option that lets you specify the mplayer executable, and replace it with mplayer-mt.

Unfortunately I have no idea if anything similar is possible with VLC. If you do, kindly let me know at the comments.

Because there aren’t yet enough Nisemonogatari 01 posts out there

Low camera angles, white colored silhouettes, delicious, abusive sarcasm, lens flares. What can I say. Okaerinasai.

(Yes, there are already a tonne of voices going nuts about Nise out there, my own incoherent tweet included. Sue me, I’m filing another entry into the chaos. Besides, a little birdy told me to, you know who you are)

Hana no Android Gakuen 02-04 English Translated!

Yeap it’s done! Man this is quite a bit of work @_@ I even put more effort into the cleaning and presentation this time, so hopefully it looks decent. Anyway, translated strips below, enjoy :) Episode 01 was here btw.

Oh, anyone knows if there is/will be more, and where to camp for them? These four are all I have seen.

Like all Japanese manga, this should be read right to left, top to bottom.

Episode 2: The Melancholy of Sharp-chan

Pain and Living -Kara no Kyoukai 03

Violence and sex are two things I intensely dislike when used as prominent themes in the stuff I watch, especially the former. The third film opens with a dash of disturbing scenes strongly featuring both, and I have every reason to be ired by that. Judging the book by it’s cover Kara no Kyoukai should never have been something that captures my fancy, and yet, as folks who read my previous two posts on the show would know, I am quite madly in love with the series. It simply means the storytelling and the exploration and the questions and the musings are that incredible. The third film of the Kara no Kyoukai series is a bloody mess of twisted violence and drugs and rape, but make no mistake. This is a beautiful episode.

Spoilers after the jump.

Hana no Android Gakuen 01 English Translated!

This is something of a “challenge accepted” thing when my friend idyllic asked me to translate some strips. Yes, after Ubunchu kind of faded into the backdrop, it turns out that Android also has a high-school manga!!. So far at least four strips have been released, and this is the first. I’m relatively free now so I would probably eventually translate the other three as well (and more if I can find them). That’ll be after I finish my super-procrastinated Kara no Kyoukai post though. Anyway, here it is, my apologies for the shoddy overlays (I’ve never done this before), and enjoy your Android high school comedy.

Spoilered Show

Like all Japanese manga, this should be read right to left, top to bottom.

Btw, in case it wasn’t clear, the “big 5” are Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, HTC, LG and Samsung. The two random guys on the right-most strip, second row are Casio and Huawei.

Original (raw) strip taken from here.
Other (raw) strips can be found here and here.

A New Theme and a Christmas Anisong!

And so not to be out-awesomed and outdone by Eri Uri, I have also decided to give my blog a makeover!

Hamzou says Not Bad

Oh who am I kidding, the new Neonovic has got more bells and whistles and tinkerdust than a confetti-showered parade of Christmas trees, well beyond anything I can hope to match, especially in a day (and yes, that means it’s awesome and you should click through to check it out, even if the last post was dated October). So what’s up with the makeover then? What was wrong with the old theme? What’s awesome about the new? Nothing and nothing much, really. The old one’s just been alive for far too long, and the yellow-orange motif was beginning to look like withering parchment to me, and so I decided, having recently returned from snow-covered Hokkaido, to switch into a cozy dash of white and blue. And so et voila. Everything is pretty much arranged to work like the old theme, except I finally caved and decided to support threaded comments. Hope the new look is a breath of fresh air though. I at the very least find it quite pleasant, and seasonally apt too. Of course, little teething problems and issues might still lurk around little dark corners, so if something breaks or misbehaves, just drop me a comment.

Anyway, it’s nearly Christmastime! And with it becoming increasingly clear that my next editorial isn’t going to make the next two days, I did the next best thing – I wrote this post :P Well, I guess an Anisong post is kinda better in the way of a season greeting anyway. Here’s “Attaka na Yuki“, or “Warm Snow”, which was a Christmas-episode insert song by Miki, Yayoi and the Futami twins in the Idolmaster anime. Now that’s a show I’ve been enjoying somewhat more than I expected to. In a sense the Idolmaster anime is somewhat like Christmas. There’s plenty to complain about if you’re set on complaining. Strawman villains, moe-mongering, manufactured drama, just like how the cynics would tell you Christmas is a capitalistic farce where the name of the game is to tell your loved ones you love them by spending lots of money. But just as Christmas is also (is more, I’d argue) about giving, about sharing and cheer; you could say the Idolmaster is really about the cocktail of positive themes that form the core of its storytelling: positivity within adversity, pursuit of a dream, comradeship, and danketsu, as Keiri would put it. And while there are points in which things get a little contrived, and points where more tender loving care for character development could be desired, they are counter-balanced by the handful of moments where the show manages to hit strong, evocative highs. All in all it’s a pretty enjoyable watch, and the long history of the franchise also translates into a lot of depth in terms of inside jokes and fun little seiyuu intrigue, but I’ll refer you to Keiri-the-veteran’s blog for more of that.

As for here, as usual, you can hit the jump for romaji lyrics, translations, and a picture, and hit the F8 key to listen to the song while it’s up. Hope you folks had a great year, and enjoy Attaka na Yuki.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Between Linux and Anime!

(PS: Speaking of the Idolmaster…)

I walk within the midnight dreary

I walk within the midnight dreary
On steps of lost souls weak and weary
The day’s load, the cacophony
Of lingering care, my sullen company
Glowers the horizon with quite too many
Blog posts and forsaken deeds of merry
Flickering beyond my reach and boundary
Dances the mirage, the winking Faery
Twinkling like a speck of starry
Infinity, above the midnight dreary.

Yes I know I stole “midnight dreary” from some poem that I liked but cannot remember. And yes, I’m stressed. Huge deadline period now, and right after that I’ll be going on a week-or-so-long vacation trip, so no blog posts until then. Not like I have one even close to being finished anyway (except this one, which randomly came to me as I walked my weary steps to the bus stop after a very long day of toil). Anyway, good luck to me, and happy holidays to all (most of?) the rest of you!

Kalafina -ing at AFA 2011

Important difference? I didn’t have a chair ;_;

Yes, I got suckered into forking out fifty bucks to stand at the concert. It’s all Kalafina’s fault I swear! I just couldn’t sleep at night anymore with all the disembodied voices in my head going “It’s Kalafina~~~~ KALAFINA~~~~” “They’re doing a live AT YOUR BACKYARD~~~~” “People are flying down to see them, you just need a 30 MINUTE bus ride~~~~” “You’re reallyyyy not gonna go~~~~?” “It’s friggin KALAFINA~~~~”

Alright alright I know already geez. And so I did. I went, I paid, I got starstruck, and now I’m back. And I’m just gonna take a moment here to attempt to pen some post-concert impressions while the memory is still fresh.

Fall 2011 Brainmarks!

We we we so excited~~~

What can I say, it’s a phenomenal season.

For those who missed the previous (and first) brainmarks post, here’s a little FAQ thing:

Spoilered: What are brainmarks? Show

I know I’m late as hell, but I guess that’s becoming normal :( It does mean that I managed to watch at least 2 episodes of all the shows I’m going to list though, so hopefully that somehow translates into better perspective and depth :)

Here we go!
